Greetings | News

Mandarin Updates
*This week the children continued to practice their color words (blue, green, red,orange, yellow, purple, and pink) during centers and calendar.
*Kids really "get it" through musical experiences. Both classes enjoy singing the "Finger Exercise" song and sing it well. I will have to share the songs with all the parents...Atlanta traffic, anyone?
*We have been counting numbers up to 100, skip counting by 10's, and writing numbers in Mandarin during centers. Thanks for all the book donations, I was able to pull many of those to reinforce the skills. :)
*Oh, and both classes had the pleasure to FaceTime my mom. My mom is a retired middle school principal and resides in Taiwan. Every child practiced their greeting with this proud look on their face. I still remember saying hello to an American in my little town in Taiwan back in fifth grade. The fact that a foreigner understood me was music to my ears. THIS is true language application. I mean, seriously. And yes, I had to stop my mom a couple times on wooing and ahhing about how cute the kids are. Focus mom, focus.

Mystery Reader
We had the pleasure to have Laura Beck join our class today. She had the special magic to keep the kids sitting on the rug to listen through TWO books! She rocks! Can't wait for all the future mystery readers! By the way, you are welcome to bring your lunch to enjoy it with your child afterwards. (Just make sure it's nut free.)

PIANO! I was beyond speechless when a piano was delivered to my room last Monday! I had mentioned to Amy I could take one since I play a little and would incorporate music into my daily routines. I am grateful for the donation and all the sweat that went into moving the piano to the school. Gooooo GLOBE parents!

We are officially at 22 in both classes!  You know what that means? I can finally put kids in ABC order!!! (the excitement of a teacher)

Wish List
THANK YOU fabulous parents for your dedication and support! I LOVE getting supplies and have my wish list filled every morning. Ms. Miao has been putting lots of time into creating center games with all the fun materials you've provided. YOU are making a DIFFERENCE!

Noteworthy
Other Mandarin teachers around GLOBE have been quizzing my kids in the hall way. You can't say this doesn't make me sweat (a little). Anyhow, one of them was very impressed and this is what she observed in the English classroom.  Girl O was tying Girl M's shoes. Once through, Girl M said, "Xie Xie!" and with that, Girl O replied, "Bu Ke Qi!" And they went on as nothing ever happened.

Please email all of your ASAP questions to asap@theglobeacademy.org
I don't have all the answers related to ASAP questions, so it might delay whatever there is you need.

Media Consent Form?

As much as I am eager to post videos of the beautiful children singing, I do not have permission to do so. Would any parent be so kind to generate a consent form for both Ms. Salzillo's and I? Leave a message if you'd like to take on this task! Once we have the forms turned in we will start uploading the videos.

XieXie!

Reminder for Week of August 26-30, 2013

*Wish List

I have added items to the wish list on top of the ones Christina sent out. (Thanks Christina and all the wonderful supplies everyone has brought in!!) Please check out the list on the side bar --->

*Snacks

Please continue to make sure all fruit snacks are labeled "snack" so the teachers can quickly identify them. And please make sure to adhere the GLOBE policy of serving only healthy and non-sugary snacks.

* Water Bottles

The weather is looking up for this week, which means the children will get their full outside recess time (fingers crossed). Please prepare a bottle of water for your child to keep them hydrated throughout the day. Also make sure the bottles are labeled.

* Family Pictures

We are continuing our "All About Me" theme this week. Please bring pictures of family members and a poster board on Monday, 8/26. It does not have to be a group picture, but rather pictures (limit 5) of family members. We will discuss our family values and study the names/titles of family members in Mandarin.

Here is a great way preview with your child -

Busy Bees

We have been studying our colors and numbers in Mandarin. Here is a sneak peek at what our kids are up to these days. More to come...:)

Eco Friendly?

So being a constructivist school as we are, I want all of your input on - Eco Friendly hand drying methods. THANK YOU for all the parents who contributed paper towels over the last two weeks. However, going through one roll per day(!) is not only harming our mother earth, but sending a wasteful message to our children. Any input will be greatly appreciated! Our goal is to reduce paper waste while still keeping our hands dry and clean!

Utah Dual Language Immersion Program

Here is a peek into Utah's Dual Language Immersion Program that was shared during our retreat in August. It gives you some perspective of the kind of day your child goes through. GLOBE is on the forefront of Dual Language Immersion program in Georgia. Be couraged! :)

4 days in!

So far each of my classes have been with me for four days each and I  am amazed by how far they have come in just a short period of time. We are now counting from 1 to 10, recognizing them, and writing numbers 1-3 (一,二,三). My students know the "ni hao song" on cue, able to greet others in Mandarin without hesitant, and are beginning to ask to go to the bathroom(廁所)in Mandarin. The students have also learned color words ( red, yellow, green, and blue). All of the lessons are reinforced by songs, pictures, centers, games, and more songs! Did I mention how much we sing?

The beginning of the school year is always filled with anxiety, excitement, and lots of reassurance. Not to mention the students in my class have to overcome all of the above plus figuring out a foreign language. So kudos to all students and parents for putting your best foot forward to make the first eight days possible.

Welcome!
